Cheesy POP at your wedding reception? Heavens YES or HELL NO?
In your head you are thinking “I don’t want a typical cheesy wedding,” but at the back of your mind you know that some pop is going to fill your dance floor. The purpose of this post is to reassure you that you shouldn’t fear a cheesy segment if thats your guilty pleasure….I can assure you that you are not the only one!
My name is Dan, a Specialist Wedding DJ based in Hertford. I have some areas I specialise in. I am known for providing epic Kisstory / Garage / RnB style sets at weddings, so It may surprise you that I LOVE to include a cheesy section too! Done in the correct way and the right time, a pop section will fill your dance floor with dancers and dare say it…. almost seem cool?
Its all about getting the balance right.
My philosophy as a DJ is simple, “Play music for everybody and everybody will enjoy the party.” A great DJ will have Garage ravers dancing to Backstreet Boys and Gran cutting some shapes to So Solid Crew.
At your wedding it’s important to tell your DJ the genres you want, even mores than specific tracks. Have lots of mini sets of genres and cater for everyone. The best weddings have it all, there are so many great genres to choose from. I love playing Motown, 70’s, 80’s, Current Chart, Club Classics, Kisstory, Indie and Pop (to name a handful).
Ok, lets get to it. Picture the scene.
Its about 10.30 / 11.00pm and guests are dancing away. The buffet has been destroyed, the drinks have been flowing and everyone is having a ball. The evening has been full of floor fillers old and new, I have been warming up the vocal chords as well as dancing feet. Lets take the party up a gear. Before I hit party goers with some pop I need to balance the section with something cool.
A party RnB section can work well with artists like Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Fatman Scoop, Montel Jordan and so on. Next I start to make the switch! I play something inbetween cool and cheesy like “The Fresh Prince of Bell Air” theme. Suddenly everyone is singing along, they know the words, they just forgot the knew them :).
Everything is set! There is no going back! I press play.. Peter Andre – Mysterious Girl (ultimate cheesy track, a real stinker). The perfect bridge to POP. Now if you are reading this and thinking NO WAY, then I understand your hesitation but trust me, a great DJ will have you singing along and busting moves like you are an oiled up Andre with awful hair dancing under a waterfall. (Sorry for placing that image in your head).
More guests flock to the dance floor and suddenly space is at a premium. All ages are dancing, there is an opportunity to really make a moment for everyone in the room. If there is one thing POP music does it puts a smile on peoples faces. It has the power to bring families together and have fun. A cheesy section doesn’t take its self too seriously and thats the beauty of it. Time to make a happy memory, enjoy.
